some poetry
Desiderata

1927 Max Erhmann

Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible without surrender
be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
and listen to others,
even the dull and the ignorant;
they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons,
they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain and bitter;
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.

Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs;
for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals;
and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself.
Especially, do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love;
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment
it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself.

You are a child of the universe,
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be,
and whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful.
Strive to be happy.
philosophy

I feel like I figured something out the other day.

We've been going over God in my philosophy class and there's this battle being raged between the Christians and the atheists like you could expect. One day I was verbalizing my ideas about God on our discussion board, and while I was writing about how to get around the problem of evil I wrote "God is a verb." Something clicked at that moment and suddenly everything started to make a bit more sense. Call it a vision of clarity or something, but it just felt so right, like the belief had been waiting for me my entire life. Some famous person said that anyway, it's not my own phrase, but it was the same idea.

I talked to my philosophy teacher, Dr. McEvoy, after class today, because today we were talking about ethics and ethical relativism and absolutism. I found out today that I am pretty much an ethical relativist about most issues. It's so conditional. Anyway, she was talking about relativism and said that while relativism is not right, because there are some moral absolutes, relativism has a totally awesome point that you should not be closed-minded about anything at first because even if something seems fucking crazy and wrong, examine it and see if you actually think it's all that wrong. It's scary to think about but sometimes your mind gets changed. RUN WITH IT.

Anyway, the point is that I was asking her about this and then it hit me that that is the point of philosophy! To examine the world we live in! It doesn't matter what you believe as long as you try and understand what it is you actually believe in. It's not about getting the answers; it's about the path you take getting there. Holy crap, everything makes perfect sense right now.

Now I will go eat chips.

I'd have you call me tonight so we could talk about some similar stuff or I'd even write it down somewhere, but I'm not at my house so this sentence isn't going to make a lot of sense. Meantime, enjoy your chips, and I'll write about one of my theories a bit later.
